Which Medifast Plan is best for me?
Medifast has two primary Plans that are used for men and
women. The Medifast 55 Plan, which has been designed
specifically for women, contains just 90 calories per
package. The second Plan—Medifast 70—has been formulated for
men or very active women and provides a slight calorie boost
(100 per package) and an additional 3 grams of protein. This
extra protein is useful in the protection of lean muscles
during weight loss.
Medifast also offers a product with a natural appetite
suppressant. This product, Med Plus, can be used alone or in
combination with the Medifast 55 or Medifast 70 Plans. We
have also found it to be extremely useful in clients who
still have hunger problems after a week on either the
Medifast 55 or Medifast 70 Plans. You can use Med Plus up to
three times daily in place of other shakes to control
hunger. The appetite suppressant in Med Plus is made from an
all-natural herb called Garcinia Cambogia. This herb has
been extensively studied and has been found not only to be
very effective in controlling appetite, but it also has no
stimulant properties like Ephedra.

Should I choose the 5&1 Plan or the Complete
Plan?
In our clinic we recommend the 5&1 Plan for the first week.
This enables your body to get used to the lower caloric
intake and to the Medifast products. After one week, you can
choose to remain on the 5&1 Plan or change over to the
Complete Plan. You can also mix and match the Plans, and
many of our clients choose to go with the Complete Plan
Monday through Friday and switch to the 5&1 Plan on the
weekends. This allows you flexibility in your weekend eating
when there are more people around and it is harder to stick
to the Complete Plan.
The 5&1 Plan consists of four to five supplements during
the day and a well-balanced, low-fat meal in the evening.
The Complete Plan calls for five supplements per day and no
evening meal. Your weight loss will only be slightly less on
the 5&1 Plan.

What is ketosis?
Ketosis is a natural metabolic state your body attains when
faced with a low caloric intake and adequate protein. The
body metabolizes fat for gluconeogenisis (energy) and the
byproducts of the fast metabolism are ketones. Ketones are
not harmful to your body. In fact, the brain works
especially well on ketones.
The ketosis associated the Medifast Plans is very mild
and is nothing like the metabolic ketoacidosis associated
with diabetes or extreme alcohol use, both of which are
extreme and can be harmful primarily due to pH changes in
the blood. The mild ketosis experienced during the Medifast
Plans is generally attained on the third or fourth day of
the Complete Plan, and will help relieve your hunger and
will help elevate your mood .

What products does Medifast have for Diabetics?
Medifast has created an exciting new line of products called
Medifast Plus for Diabetics especially for those with Type
II, or Adult-onset, Diabetes. The low glycemic index of
these products is especially suitable for diabetic patients.
Available in both shakes and bars, these new products are a
delicious way for those with diabetes to reap the benefits
of the Medifast Diet, and control blood sugar. The shakes
are available in three flavors—chocolate, vanilla, and
strawberry—and the bars come in Peanut Butter Crunch and
Chocolate Crunch.
All of the Medifast Plus for Diabetics products are high
in fiber (4g per serving), high in calcium, and contain just
8.5g of soy protein per serving. If you are a Type II
diabetic and must lose weight, these are the products you
should use. Other Medifast products suitable for diabetics
include Creamy Chicken and Creamy Broccoli soups, Home Style
Chili, Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal, and Chicken Noodle soup.

What is the Glycemic Index?
The Glycemix Index is a measurement developed several years
ago to describe the degree to which a particular food raises
your blood sugar. It was originally thought that foods such
as simple table sugar had a very high Glycemic Index and
raised your blood sugar to high levels after you ate it.
This was later found to be untrue and foods such as baked
potatoes were found to have a much higher Glycemic Index.
Diabetics should be especially interested in controlling
their blood sugar through proper diet. Medifast products for
diabetics have been designed with a low Glycemix Index and
allow easier control of your blood sugar while helping you
lose weight.

How should I adjust my diabetic medications while
on the Medifast Plan?
Although the products that make up the Medifast Plus for
Diabetics line are designed to help you control sugar while
you lose weight, some adjustment may be necessary. We
recommend that you consult with your physician about your
current insulin dosage or oral agents prior to beginning the
program. It is also important to remember that Medifast Plus
for Diabetics should be used only by those who have Adult
Onset (Type II) Diabetes. These products should not be used
by Juvenile Onset (Type I) diabetics more than once or twice
a day and only under the strict supervision of a physician.
Please consult with your local prescribing physician before
making any changes to your medications. The following are
recommendations from the manufacturer of Medifast Plus for
Diabetics:
- We recommend that you drink five to six 8oz
glasses of water per day in addition to the water
you take in with your Medifast supplements.
- If you are taking oral hypoglycemic, we
recommend that you discontinue these medications
after beginning your Medifast Plan.
- If you are taking insulin, we recommend the
following changes in your medication:
- For those taking less than 30 units of insulin
per day, we recommend that you discontinue your
insulin injections after beginning your Medifast
Plan.
- For those taking more than 30 units of insulin
per day, we recommend that you cut your dosage in
half after beginning the Medifast Plan. Please check
with your prescribing physician before making
changes to your medication. Take your blood sugar
reading twice daily for 10 days after beginning the
Medifast Plan.

What is Medifast for Women’s Health?
This is a new and exciting product from Jason
Pharmaceuticals -- the manufacturer of Medifast -- that
utilizes not only the valuable benefits of soy but also
contains Black Cohosh, Chaste Tree Berry, and Echinacea.
The benefits of soy on menopausal symptoms have been
noted for years. Soy not only helps reduce blood pressure
(used extensively in Europe for this purpose), but will also
reduce cholesterol levels. Soy contains phytoestrogens,
which reduce the vasomotor symptoms of menopause such as hot
flashes and night sweats. A regular consumption of soy has
also been shown to reduce the incidence of breast and colon
cancers.
Medifast for Women’s Health is a safe, healthy, and
natural alternative to Hormone Replacement Therapy. It can
be substituted into the Medifast 55 and Medifast 70 Plans up
to three times daily in place of other supplements.

What do the herbs in Medifast for Women’s Health
do?
Medifast for Women’s Health includes three key herbs. Black
Cohosh has been used for centuries to treat female symptoms
of menopause and comes from the plant actaea racemosa, which
is a member of the Butter Cup family. Black Cohosh has been
shown to reduce hot flashes and other vasomotor symptoms.
Chaste Tree Berry, a Eurasian tree, contains the
flavanoids agnuside and aucubin, which are effective in
relieving symptoms of PMS. It has been used for years in
Europe to treat symptoms of PMS and irregular menstrual
bleeding secondary to menopause.
Echinacea, which comes from the purple coneflower native
to the American Midwest, has been shown to enhance the
body’s immune response.

What is Medifast for Joint Health?
This product has been designed especially for those who
suffer from joint pain secondary to osteoarthritis. Many
people who are overweight develop osteoarthritis prematurely
and, consequently, have joint pain especially in the knees
and hips.
Medifast for Joint Health contains the highest quality
chondroitin and glucosamine. Each package contains 500mg of
both chondroitin and glucosamine. This product may be
substituted into the Medifast 55 and Medifast 70 Plans up to
three times daily in place of other supplements.

What are Glucosamine and Chondroitin?
Glucosamine is an amino acid sugar that is necessary for
proper joint function. It has been shown to improve symptoms
of osteoarthritis and rehabilitate damaged joint cartilage.
It has been shown that glucosamine is more effective when
taken in its liquid form than in capsular form due to better
absorption.
Chondroitin is a naturally occurring, vital compound in
connective tissue. Taken as a supplement, it has been shown
to relieve joint pain associated with osteoarthritis by
drawing water into the cartilage, thus increasing elasticity
and preventing further damage.

How much water should I drink?
We recommend that you take in five to six 8oz glasses of
water each day in addition to the fluid you take in with
your Medifast supplements.

Is it OK to have diet drinks?
Diet sodas are acceptable while on the Medifast Diet, as are
Crystal Lite and Diet Kool Aid.

How much coffee can I drink?
We recommend that you limit your coffee intake to two or
three cups per day. Caffeine causes a release of adrenaline
in your body and may cause changes in your blood sugar
levels. You can use low-fat milk or half-and-half in your
coffee, and we recommend no-calorie sweeteners.

Can I drink alcohol?
You should not drink alcohol while on the Medifast Diet.
Alcohol will take your body out of ketosis and slow your
weight loss down dramatically.

What if I still have hunger?
If you are still having problems with hunger after being on
the Medifast Plan for five or more days, we recommend the
following:
- Use an additional supplement during the day.
- Consider substituting Medifast Plus for Appetite
Suppression as a supplement once or twice daily.
- Use the Medifast snacks, Fast Soup and Crackers
when you feel hungry.
- Chew celery. You can have up to five stalks per
day.

What about changes in my bowel habits?
You may experience changes in your bowel habits after
beginning the Medifast Diet. The most common change is the
need to go less frequently. This is nothing to worry about.
Some people experience loose stools for the first week on
the Plan. This has to do with the high protein content and
the increased water intake. Symptoms usually go away within
a week or so. If you continue to have loose stools, we
recommend that you take PeptoBismol or a similar
over-the-counter product once or twice daily until symptoms
stop.

What if I get a rash while on the Plan?
On rare occasions there have been reports of skin rash while
on the Medifast Diet. This is due to the increased protein
intake and will usually go away after a few days. You can
also use Benadryl (25mg) and cortisone cream, both of which
are available over the counter.

What if I don’t lose weight each day?
First of all, it is completely normal to gain a pound or so
from one day to the next. We do not recommend that you weigh
each day. Abrupt changes from one day to the next are almost
always caused by water, so don’t worry.
Occasionally, during a long period of weight loss, the
body will hold onto its fat for a week or two and weight
loss will slow or stop. This is what we call a plateau.
During a plateau phase, do not stop taking your supplements.
Stopping your supplements will cause the body to go into a
starvation phase and it will be even harder to begin losing
weight again. We recommend that you increase exercise during
a plateau and not worry. Your body will stop holding onto
the fat after a short time and you will start losing weight
again rapidly and safely.

How long can I stay on Medifast?
Medifast is nutritionally complete food, so you can stay on
the Medifast Diet as long as needed. We have had many
clients in our clinic on the Plan for more than a year with
no adverse effects.

What if I am lactose intolerant?
The FDA gives a lactose-free label to products that contain
1/2g of lactose or less per serving. Medifast 55 and
Medifast 70 have only 1g of lactose per serving. If you
experience a gurgling stomach or indigestion after consuming
a Medifast product, and you know that you are lactose
intolerant, you should try taking Lactaid -- an
over-the-counter medication for those with lactose
intolerance. Taking two tablets with each supplement will
usually remedy the problem.

How should I exercise?
In our clinic we recommend that you not exercise for the
first two weeks after starting the Plan. Following the first
two weeks, you should begin mild exercise such as walking up
to 30 minutes per day. As time goes on, gradually increase
your exercise.

What are the benefits of soy?
Medifast products are made with a significant amount of
healthy soy protein. The FDA has issued the statement that a
diet low in saturated fat and containing at least 25 grams
of soy protein per day may reduce the risk of heart disease.
Soy has also been shown to reduce cholesterol levels and
increase bone strength.

What if I start
losing my hair?
In rare cases people who are on a Very Low Calorie Diet (VLCD)
will experience hair loss while on the diet. This usually
happens only after prolonged dieting (three or more months).
The hair loss is usually not severe and is not permanent.
Your hair will come back once you are finished dieting. If
you are beginning to experience hair loss, we recommend that
you begin taking a vitamin that contains zinc, biotin, and
extra B-vitamins. We also recommend that you take one
teaspoon of olive oil once or twice weekly if you are going
to be on the Plan for more than one month. This will keep
your skin and hair in good shape.

What does Medifast have in it?
Each Medifast product contains a healthy portion of
high-quality soy protein and 25 - 50% of the RDI of
essential vitamins and minerals. The FDA has issued the
statement that a diet low in saturated fat and containing at
least 25 grams of soy protein per day may reduce the risk of
heart disease. Medifast 55 and Medifast 70 shakes have only
1g of lactose per serving.
Medifast Plus for Appetite Suppression contains a natural
herb called Garcinia Cambogia that has been extensively
studied as an appetite suppressant. It has no stimulating
properties like Ephedra.

What if I am on medications?
First of all, always check with your physician before making
any changes to your medications. Here are a few guidelines
for specific medications:
Diabetic Medications
Oral hypoglicemics should be discontinued after beginning
the Medifast Diet to prevent low blood sugar.
For those taking less than 30 units of insulin per day,
we recommend that you discontinue your insulin injections
after beginning your Medifast Plan.
For those taking more than 30 units of insulin per day,
we recommend that you cut your dosage in half after
beginning the Medifast Plan. Please check with your
prescribing physician before making changes to your
medication. Take your blood sugar reading twice daily for 10
days after beginning the Medifast Plan, and then daily after
that.
High Blood Pressure
Medications
We recommend that you stay on your medications for high
blood pressure until you have lost 25 pounds on the Medifast
Diet. You should also see your prescribing doctor before
making any changes to your medication.
Diuretics or Water Pills
If you are taking a diuretic, we recommend that you see
the prescribing doctor to adjust or stop this medication
while on the Medifast Diet.
General Prescription Drugs
Most drugs do not present any problems with the Medifast
Diet.

What if I feel a reaction to Medifast products?
If at any time you feel you are having a reaction to any
Medifast supplements, stop taking them and contact us.
