Each day you simply eat any 5 Medifast Meals and 1 “lean and green” meal.
For the Medifast meals you choose from any combination of over 70 different
foods – shakes, soups, bars, oatmeal, pudding, chili, and hot and cold
drinks. The “lean and green” meal is just a low fat, healthy regular meal
consisting of 5 to 7 ounces of a lean meat or vegetarian protein plus either
a large green salad or portion of cooked green vegetable. This plan provides
you with about 800 to 1000 calories a day.
Each Medifast meal is a complete meal replacement – whether it is fruit
punch or chocolate pudding. By having 5 a day you will get 100% of your
daily required vitamins and minerals. If you have special nutritional needs

You can have your lean and green meal any time of the day - most typically
at dinner time or lunchtime - whatever works best for your schedule. It can
be a home cooked meal or restaurant prepared. It should consist of:
Lean protein – 7 ounces of chicken, turkey, or fish or 5 ounces of lean
beef, pork or lamb that is grilled, baked or poached using non-stick spray.
Vegetarians can use low-fat cheeses, eggs (whites or substitute), tofu or
veggie burgers. Salt, pepper, herbs, and spices may be added if desired.
Salad or Vegetable – 2 cups of salad (salad greens, cabbage, spinach,
sprouts, celery, radishes, cucumber, pepper, or tomato) and up to ½ cup raw
vegetables or 1 ½ cups cooked vegetables.
You may also use 1-2 TBSP. of Medifast Dressing or any low fat and low carb
dressing on your salad or as a marinate.
THE COMPLETE PLAN
The 5 & 1 plan is recommended for most people as it allows rapid yet safe
weight loss. However, in some cases your doctor may want you to be on a
lower calorie program. The complete plan should only be followed while under
your physician’s supervision due to its very low calorie intake. With the
complete program, you have only Medifast meal replacements, 6 a day, with no
lean and green meal. This plan provides you with about 550 to 700 calories a
day.
MEDIFAST 55 VERSUS 70
Weight loss and nutrition needs tend to vary from men to women. The Medifast
55 shakes are specifically formulated for women. The Medifast 70 shakes
contain a higher amount of protein and calories needed by men and very
active women.
EXERCISE
You can lose the weight you want on Medifast without exercise (which makes
it perfect for people who are unable to exercise for physical, time or other
reasons). However, adding exercise can speed up your weight loss and of
course provides other important health benefits. Because your body is
changing to a new source of fuel and adjusting to reduced calories, we
recommend either no or reduced exercise for the first 3 weeks on the
Medifast plan. If you have not been exercising, wait until your 3rd week to
start. If you already are exercising regularly, cut the intensity and
duration of your program in half for those first 3 weeks. Then slowly add to
and increase your workout. Aerobic exercise such as walking is the best.
While on the program, you are getting enough protein to not lose muscle
mass. However, you are not getting enough protein to support a body building
or serious weight lifting program. If you are exercising below the point of
sweating, then you are at the proper level of effort.
WATER
Water is also a very important part of all the Medifast plans and you should
drink eight 8-oz glasses a day in addition to the water in your Medifast
meals.
